Republicans Gaining Ground in Deep Blue State

According to the latest voter registration data, reported by Michael Pruser of Decision Desk HQ, Republicans have gained over 200 new voters in New Mexico, while Democrats have lost nearly 100.

While the raw numbers may seem small, New Mexico itself is not a large state—and this shift reflects a consistent trend we’ve been seeing across the country: Republicans gaining voter registrations while Democrats remain stagnant or even lose ground.

It’s hard to square the narrative that Donald Trump is deeply unpopular with the reality that Republicans are continuing to gain voters in traditionally deep-blue states like New Mexico.

If Trump were truly underwater by 10 points, as the latest questionable AtlasIntel poll suggests, it would be difficult to explain why Republican voter registration is rising in states like this.

New Mexico was surprisingly competitive in the last presidential cycle, with Trump losing the state by only about six points.

Trump had lost New Mexico by over 10 points in the 2020 election, and by about eight points in 2016.

If Republicans continue to make gains here, New Mexico could become a true swing state by 2028 or 2032.

It would behoove Republicans to pass Trump’s campaign promises of no taxes on tips and overtime if they want to continue to make gains with Hispanic voters, which is a crucial demographic group to become competitive and win a state like New Mexico.
